A kids’ yoga class is designed to be fun, engaging, and tailored to the developmental needs of children. Here's a snapshot of what a class might look like:
1. Warm-Up and Introduction:
Greeting and Circle Time: The class often starts with a circle where the instructor greets each child and introduces the theme of the day (e.g., animals, adventure, space). This might include a fun song or a short story.
Gentle Stretching: Simple stretches to get the body moving and to focus attention. This might include reaching for the sky, bending side to side, or rolling the shoulders.
2. Yoga Poses and Activities:
Pose Exploration: The instructor introduces basic yoga poses, often using playful names and themes.
Movement Games: Incorporating yoga poses into games, like “Pose Freeze Dance” where kids hold a pose when the music stops, or “Simon Says” where they show off the poses that they have learned and mimic the teacher.
3. Storytelling and Imaginative Play:
Yoga Adventures: Using storytelling to guide the practice. For instance, they might go on a “Jungle Adventure” where each pose represents an animal or scene in the jungle. This makes the poses more relatable and exciting.
Visualization: Guided imagery exercises where children imagine themselves in different settings, like floating on a cloud or growing into a tall tree.
4. Breathing Exercises:
Simple Breathing Techniques: Introducing basic breathing exercises that are easy and fun, such as “Bee Breath” where they make a buzzing sound while exhaling, or “Bubble Breath” where they pretend to blow bubbles.
5. Cool Down and Relaxation:
Gentle Stretching and Relaxation: Ending with calming stretches and a relaxation period. This might include lying down and imagining floating on a cloud or being a peaceful butterfly.
6. Positive Reinforcement and Fun:
Encouragement and Fun: The instructor offers praise and encouragement throughout, making sure that the experience is both positive and enjoyable. Props like mats, blocks, bolsters, or straps, along with lively music, enhance the fun and interactive nature of the class.
Parents and guardians are more than welcome to participate with the kids or watch! Release and liability waivers are required to be signed at the first class for the child to be able to participate.
