Yoga Nidra
Join Rachel M on Sunday, December 29 at 6pm for a Yoga Nidra class!
Yoga Nidra, often referred to as "yogic sleep," is a state of conscious relaxation that promotes deep rest and rejuvenation. It's a guided meditation practice typically conducted lying down in a comfortable position. Here’s a brief overview:
Preparation: You lie down in a comfortable position, usually on your back, with your arms at your sides and your eyes closed. Props like bolsters, blocks, and blankets are used to help find maximum comfort. Layers and socks are recommended.
Guided Journey: A teacher or audio guide leads you through a series of instructions designed to help you relax deeply. This often includes body scans, breath awareness, and visualizations.
Body Awareness: The practice often involves a systematic rotation of consciousness through different parts of the body, encouraging physical relaxation and mental stillness.
Breath and Sensation: You’re guided to focus on your breath and bodily sensations, which helps release tension and stress.
Intention Setting: At some point, you may be invited to set an intention or Sankalpa, which is a positive affirmation or goal that you wish to manifest.
Deep Relaxation: The state you enter during Yoga Nidra is akin to the first stages of sleep but with full awareness. This can lead to profound mental and physical relaxation, enhancing overall well-being.
Awakening: The practice concludes with a gradual return to a waking state, leaving you feeling refreshed and centered.
Yoga Nidra is renowned for its benefits, including stress reduction, improved sleep, and enhanced emotional resilience. It's accessible to all levels and can be practiced regularly to support mental and physical health.

SBPY Kids Yoga
Introducing SBPY’s First Kids Yoga Class!
Rachel and Beth are super excited to be leading a Kids Yoga Class! This will be offered once a month and offered to two different age groups: 3-5 years old & 6-9 years old. Classes are 30-45 minutes depending on the age group.
Class Dates:
November 9
December 14
Class Times: Saturdays
(AGE GROUP 3-5): 11-11:30am
(AGE GROUP 6-9): 12-12:45pm
A kids’ yoga class is designed to be fun, engaging, and tailored to the developmental needs of children. Here's a snapshot of what a class might look like:
1. Warm-Up and Introduction:
Greeting and Circle Time: The class often starts with a circle where the instructor greets each child and introduces the theme of the day (e.g., animals, adventure, space). This might include a fun song or a short story.
Gentle Stretching: Simple stretches to get the body moving and to focus attention. This might include reaching for the sky, bending side to side, or rolling the shoulders.
2. Yoga Poses and Activities:
Pose Exploration: The instructor introduces basic yoga poses, often using playful names and themes.
Movement Games: Incorporating yoga poses into games, like “Pose Freeze Dance” where kids hold a pose when the music stops, or “Simon Says” where they show off the poses that they have learned and mimic the teacher.
3. Storytelling and Imaginative Play:
Yoga Adventures: Using storytelling to guide the practice. For instance, they might go on a “Jungle Adventure” where each pose represents an animal or scene in the jungle. This makes the poses more relatable and exciting.
Visualization: Guided imagery exercises where children imagine themselves in different settings, like floating on a cloud or growing into a tall tree.
4. Breathing Exercises:
Simple Breathing Techniques: Introducing basic breathing exercises that are easy and fun, such as “Bee Breath” where they make a buzzing sound while exhaling, or “Bubble Breath” where they pretend to blow bubbles.
5. Cool Down and Relaxation:
Gentle Stretching and Relaxation: Ending with calming stretches and a relaxation period. This might include lying down and imagining floating on a cloud or being a peaceful butterfly.
6. Positive Reinforcement and Fun:
Encouragement and Fun: The instructor offers praise and encouragement throughout, making sure that the experience is both positive and enjoyable. Props like mats, blocks, bolsters, or straps, along with lively music, enhance the fun and interactive nature of the class.
Parents and guardians are more than welcome to participate with the kids or watch! Release and liability waivers are required to be signed at the first class for the child to be able to participate.
Cost: $15 per class
When registering, please register under your child’s name so we can learn names quickly! Just include your phone number and email in their profile.

Yoga is so much more than a workout, it is an amazing tool for managing mental health. Yoga should be considered as a complementary therapy in the treatment of stress, anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders as it has been shown to create a greater sense of well-being, increase feelings of relaxation, improve self-confidence and body image, improve efficiency, better interpersonal relationships, increase attentiveness, lower irritability, and encourage an optimistic outlook on life (NIH 2011).
Help us support those that need assistance in their mental health journey!
*Donations can be made by cash, Venmo, or check at the studio
